Abstract
This is the first scientific paper related to the website “Material Culture of Italo-Greek Medieval Monasticism - Master TECAM”, in the linked online journal of Medieval studies Spolia.
It summarizes data from the first archaeological surveys undertaken, by the writer and other researchers, in Southern Italy, mainly in the Byzantine reconquest sites. In fact the first archaeological excavations that focus on these buildings were undertaken only in the 1990s in Italo-Greek monasteries or shrines in Southern Italian areas, such as Latinianon, Salento or the Eparchy of Saline.
The paper aims to introduce the analysis of Italo-Greek monasteries, their specific aspects and increasingly detailed regional or sub-regional synthesis about this kind of monasteries, even in comparison with other areas of Byzantine monasticism.
